My father, "Dad" trained as a doctor from Bhopal. In 1961, he travelled to England to pursue a career in medicine. Before going he was given "The Golden Rules" by his parents. "Don't smoke, don't drink and don't marry a British woman." Wearing his only suit, a red one. he ended up in Greenock Scotland. Five years later, he returned to India with a box of cigars in his case, a botte of whisky from duty free and a Scottish wife, my Mum. More importantly, he returned as a Cardiologist with an MRCP, in those days considered a huge achievement. He went on to found Talwar Medical Centre on the background of building a reputation of being an honest and competent doctor. Even today, years after his death, the number of people who speak warmly of my father is astounding.
